Urban Legends: The Environmental Effect of Boulevard Trees

Dutch Elm Disease claimed many of cities' beloved boulevard trees.  Now the Emerald Ash Borer is threatening to do the same to their successors.  What is the true impact of a boulevard tree, positive and negative, in the urban ecosystem?  Do they provide tangible energy savings during the summer with the shade they provide? Can trees provide significant improvements in air quality?  Nicholas' research,  in a partnership with the University of Minnesota, is providing answers to this question and his work is being compiled into a guide for local municipalities to proactively address the next generation of boulevard trees
